Avoid Rolling Over Debt

Payday loans help consumers when situations beyond their control leave them with a need to borrow emergency cash. Not everyone thinks that payday loans are such a good idea. The media has published horror stories about people who borrowed money with payday loans, and were unable to pay them off. They would take out one payday loan to pay off another one. While there are a few rare cases where people continue to roll over their payday loans and have difficulty paying them off, it is easy to avoid this situation. If you need to take out a payday loan, you can set up a budget in order to prepare to pay the loan back. Get out a piece of paper or a spreadsheet and follow the steps below to set up a budget to ensure that you can pay back your loan:

Step 1: List Your Expenses

The first thing that you need to do to set up your payday loan budget is to list your expenses. Make sure that you list everything that you need to purchase with your next paycheck. Include food, utility payments, money you need to set aside for rent, and anything else that you would be spending with your next check. Add in the cost of paying back your paycheck advance.

Step 2: List Your Income

Now that you have listed your expenses, compile a list of your income. You will have a paycheck coming in, of course. Will your spouse also have money coming in? Will you receive child support? If you are expecting money from any source, put it down.

Step 3: Balance Your Income and Expenses

Your next step is to make sure that you have enough income coming in to pay the expenses that you need to pay. If you are earning more than you are spending, wonderful! You can afford to take out the payday loan. If not, try to think of ways to make the budget balance. Were you eating out on any nights when you could eat at home? Can you take leftovers to work instead of running through the drive-through? Do you really need to get a haircut this week, or can you put it off? Can you work some overtime? You may have to make some hard choices, but if you need to borrow this money, you have to have a plan to pay it back.

If Your Budget Can't Balance

If you can't find a way to balance the budget with the payday loan, you need to adjust your expectations. Do you really need the payday loan? Can you take out less? Can you sell something? If you take out the loan without being able to balance your budget, you won't be able to pay back the loan on time, and you will end up rolling over the balance. Do what it takes to ensure that you are able to pay off your loan, so you don't get stuck on a payday loan roller coaster.
